Honeymoons
It is commonly disputed, but we feel the most romantic origin of the word honeymoon comes from the first full moon of a newly married couples love for each other, when it is at its brightest and the sweetness of newly harvested honey, when, traditionally, it is at its peak flavour. After these initial periods, both the lunar brightness starts to dim and the nectar from the bee, starts to dissipate. The OED (Oxford English Dictionary) gives us no actual history of the word, but through researching the subject, we found it can be easily dated back to the sixteenth century, when a great linguist and poet of the era, Dr. Samuel Johnson, roughly quoted it as 'The first month after marriage, where there is nothing but tenderness and love, before settling down to an ordinary home life together'.
There are many different translations in different languages; all seem to have the same colloquial meaning. In Spanish, it is called 'la luna de miel', which translates to 'The Moon of Honey', in traditional Welsh dialect it is named 'mis mêl', or the 'honey month' and in Arabic it is termed 'shahr el 'assal', also the 'honey month'.
A more scientific alternative is a path taken by the moon when it is close to the southern horizon. Its light shines though the haze and dust of our atmosphere giving its light a honey colour for the whole month. Comedians and satirists tend to say honeymoon salad, or 'lettuce alone'. |

All in all, across the world, it has nothing but a positive meaning, and when you say to people you are on your honeymoon, you tend to get the same response: 'Aah, how lovely!' In recent times, it has been developed into a holiday period for the newlyweds, traditionally taken directly from the wedding reception. More recently, it is leaning towards two other forms of incorporation into the wedding. Firstly, more couples are opting to combine the actual ceremony with the honeymoon, with a beach wedding and then staying on at the destination for seclusion and sexual intimacy, and also having this vacation time taken a little further into the marriage, so the bride can travel with her new surname on her passport.
